Construction of Addenbrooke's Treatment Centre started in Oct 2004 and will cost approximately £84m through PFI funding. The new centre provides new facilities for the hospital and will bring clinical care and research together under one roof, creating a main centre for clinical work and research.

This new addition to Addenbrooke's facilities is an opportunity for updating facilities to meet modern environmental standards, improving patient environments and space for the delivery of clinical care. Vacated areas within the main hospital buildings will give the opportunity for reorganising and the prospect of modernisation, creating better, more suitable clinical and working environments. In addition, the Trust will gain flexibility for future development, either by expanding existing departments or introducing new services.
Addenbrooke's Treatment Centre will have three main purposes with a number of complimentary services:
- Surgical and Endoscopy – helping us to operate more efficiently
- Medical genetics – harnessing scientific discoveries for the future of your health
- Diabetes and Endocrinology with the Institute of Metabolic Science – Translating the research of today into the treatment of tomorrow
What are the benefits of the new centre?
The treatment centre has been built for a number of reasons. As part of the 2020 vision scheme it is an investment into the future of the hospital.
As well as modernising the hospital by providing state of the art facilities the new centre will reduce the number of cancelled operations, improve the quality of service through better resources and provide better facilities to work in. In previous years limited space has dictated the design, but the new centre shall give us some flexibility. We will now have extra space for the clinics and departments which have been functioning in cramped facilities
Bringing both clinical and research together within the same facility will translate directly into new therapies for patients, improving our service. By working with our patients in new and innovative ways we are modernizing the NHS by making it more efficient and effective.
