Helping five hundred patients every week...

With eight scanning rooms and the very latest technology for diagnosing conditions like kidney stones, blood clots and cancer, the hospital’s new Ultrasound Department has been helping five hundred patients every week since it opened in May.

“The new facilities couldn’t be any better,” says Julie Smith, the radiographer in charge of the ultrasound service. “This equipment is state of the art. It makes it easier for us to get the clearest possible scans, and having each machine in a separate room means that we can make the experience as pleasant as possible for our patients.”

Dr Lol Berman, one of the hospital’s consultant radiologists, says: “We now have one of the best-equipped ultrasound departments not only in the UK, but in Europe. The team here is fantastic, and these new facilities will help them do even better work. I know that patients will benefit as a result.”

The new facilities are named in recognition of the work of Sheila Swinney, who died in 2002 after running the department for five years. Her family were guests of honour at the official opening in May. “We are absolutely delighted that the new department has been named after Sheila,” says her sister, Anne Swinney. “It is a fantastic honour, and she would have been thrilled that her colleagues at Addenbrooke’s wanted to remember her in this way.”
