With 696 years’ service between them, the hospital’s longest-serving volunteers have proved themselves to be committed to helping patients and their families. The hospital organised a special reception in June to recognise their contribution and to thank all of the volunteers who give up their time.

Among them was 90-year-old Gladys Wilkin, who recently retired from her post as a volunteer guide after 31 years. “I’ve been volunteering at Addenbrooke’s from the very start of the service, and I’ve loved every minute,” says Gladys. “When I started I loved watching the elderly patients who had arrived in a wheelchair walk out on their own two feet, and now I’m 90 myself! I’ve been so happy guiding and helping people in the hospital – it’s what I was made for.”

“Our volunteers do amazing work, and we’re very grateful to all of them – but we are always looking for more people,” says Andrea MacAlister, Voluntary Services Manager. “If you’re prepared to give up some time on a regular basis, please get in touch. There are over 30 different roles open to volunteers: guiding, ward assistants, WRVS, newspaper deliveries… We’re particularly interested in hearing from you if you’re coming up to retirement – it’s a great way of meeting people and becoming a part of something very special.”
