Dr Gareth Goodier |
It’s nearly four months since
I joined the hospital. Not exactly a long time but time enough
for me to experience and appreciate what makes Addenbrooke’s
the exceptional hospital that it is.
In the short time I’ve been here, Addenbrooke’s
has already been recognised as a top-performing hospital
in the Health Service Journal Awards, and has received a
major boost with the news that we have been named as one
of the government’s new biomedical research centres.
This is a major step forward for us in our 2020 Vision, our
plan in partnership with the University and the Medical Research
Council to develop our site into the Cambridge Biomedical
Campus, a world-class centre for research and healthcare.
Of course we would not have been able to achieve this without
our staff: they make Addenbrooke’s the respected and
world-class organisation that it is.
These achievements do not mean we are complacent, and I
am determined that this recognition will be matched in the
quality of our patient experience. This will be our focus
for the coming year as we work to improve patient safety
and the information provided to patients, explore ways of
working more efficiently, and put ourselves in our patients’ shoes
- treating them as we would expect to be treated.
I know there are areas that you as patients, relatives and
carers feel strongly about - hospital infections and waiting
times for example – and it’s my job as chief
executive to make sure that we don’t take our focus
off improving patient care. I want patients to go away happier
and I hope that in the next few months patients will see
and feel this commitment to high-quality care.
I look forward to speaking to you again in the next edition
of Addenbrooke’s Matters – but please don’t
wait till then to make contact if you’d like to air
your views on any aspect of the hospital.
