About the Board of Directors

The management of the hospital is led by a Board of Directors which has significant experience in the management of other healthcare organisations including teaching hospitals. They are responsible for all operational and strategic issues, business and finance and they meet once a month.

Seven non-executive directors (including our chairman), are appointed from our local community and bring their blend of skills and experience to the Board. One non-executive is appointed to represent the University’s interests.

Directors

Dr Gareth J Goodier
Chief Executive

After qualifying as a doctor in 1975 and working in the north of England, Gareth spent many years in Australia as chief executive of a number of major hospitals and health systems. He returned to England in 2003 to take up the post of chief executive at the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust and from 2004 to mid 2006 he served as the chief executive of the North West London Strategic Health Authority. Gareth was then appointed as a chief executive of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in September 2006.

Gareth is responsible for meeting all the statutory requirements of the Trust, in addition to being the Trust’s Accountable Officer to Parliament

Dr Jag Ahluwalia
Medical Director

Jag has worked for the NHS since qualifying in 1986. He started off as a would-be GP and completed his GP training programme before changing paths into newborn intensive care. Following training in Cambridge and Melbourne he was appointed a consultant neonatolgist at Addenbrooke’s in 1996, in which role he continues clinical practice. He was Service Delivery Unit Director for Neonatology between 1998 –2003. He has been Associate Medical Director since 2004 and was appointed Network Lead Clinician in the same year. He has been an elected Senior Officer of the British Association of Perinatal Medicine since 2003.

Mr Craig Black
Director of Commissioning

Craig Black achieved a degree in economics and joined the NHS Graduate Financial Management Scheme in 1992. After qualifying as an accountant he worked in Surrey before moving to Suffolk in 1997.  He has held senior finance positions in Acute Trusts, PCTs and a Health Authority before joining Addenbrooke's in 2005.

Dr Karen Castille OBE
Director of Nursing and Organisational Development

Karen has exceptional experience in leading transformational change in the NHS at local and national levels. She has held a host positions across the NHS and in 2005 received an OBE for her national work in Emergency care and achievement of the 4-hour A&E target across England.

Karen was originally a nurse and midwife, and worked in various hospitals for twelve years before moving into management in 1993. She holds an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Management and Business Consultancy from Henley Management College (2003), an MSc in Management Research from Manchester University (1994), and she was awarded a Doctorate in Leadership and Change at Henley Management College in 2006.

Mrs Frances Cousins
Director of Information Systems and Analysis

Frances joined in the NHS as a member of the Graduate Management Training Scheme. Following management posts in London, she moved to Addenbrooke’s in 1997 where she was operational manager for four years and lead manager for a newly established cancer network. Prior to returning to Addenbrooke’s in August 2003, she worked as a Policy Advisor for the Prime Minister’s Office of Public Service Reform.

Mr Stephen Graves
Director of Corporate Development

Stephen joined the Trust in September 2001, on a part-time secondment from the Regional Office of the Department of Health. Initially he project-managed the CRUK (Cancer Research UK) development from the Trust’s perspective and the Trust’s PFI (Private Finance Initiative) scheme to build the Addenbrooke's Treatment Centre. In 2002 he became director of service improvement and project director for the PFI scheme.

Mrs Brenda Hennessy
Director of Patient Experience and Public Engagement

Brenda has worked at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Addenbrooke’s Hospital) since 1991. She was Director of Administration from April 2004 until 2006, having been Assistant Director since January 1999. Prior to this, she was Business and Information Manager for Medical Services for three years.

Her current role reflects the fact that the Trust has a strong commitment to improving the experience of our patients and its commitment to ‘customer care’.  Brenda has been the lead for patient and public involvement since the introduction of the NHS Plan 2000.

Mr Richard Howe
Director of Estates and Facilities

Richard is an engineer by profession with over 27 years experience in the NHS, he has worked at a senior management level at the Heath Authority and for the past 20 years has been head of department at Addenbrooke's. He has a wealth of experience within estates and facility management, has served at national level on Whitley Council, and has successfully led a number of large and innovative schemes at Addenbrooke's which include one of the first large shopping mall / concourses to be provided in a UK Hospital, a major Gas Turbine CHP project the first of its kind in NHS, and the design and installation of major incineration plant.

He has been responsible as team leader for a number of large change management programmes within the service, involving modernisation of both clinical and non clinical service as well as best valve programmes.

Mr David Smith
Finance Director

David joined Addenbrooke’s in July 2007 having spent 10 years of his career working in the pharmaceutical sector. He has finance experience in Sales & Marketing, Research & Development and latterly as a CFO in biotech. He has broad international experience having worked in Holland, Hungary, Sweden and Dubai. David is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales. During his time in public practice he gained experience in audit and receiverships.

Mrs Ruth St John Murphy
Director of Communications

Ruth has extensive experience in public relations and communications. She has qualifications in public relations and management, and joined Addenbrooke’s in 1992 following 10 years in the communications and trade exhibition industry. In 2002 she was appointed Head of Communications at Addenbrooke’s and under her leadership the PR & Communications team has won numerous awards including winning the top prize twice in the CIPFA Pricewaterhouse Coopers awards for public accountability.

Mr Richard Sunley
Director of Operations

Richard Sunley joined the NHS in 1983 as a Management Trainee, he then held a number of management posts in hospitals around England before coming to Addenbrooke's in 1998. As well as holding membership of the Institute of Health Service Managers, Richard graduated from Ashridge Management College in 1997 with a Masters Degree in Business Administration.

Non-Executive Directors

There are seven non-executive directors including the chairman.

Dr Mary Archer
Chairman

Mary taught chemistry in the University of Cambridge for ten years before developing a wider portfolio of interests. She became a non-executive director of Addenbrooke's NHS Trust in 1993, vice chairman of the Trust in 1999 and chairman in 2002. Mary was a member of the steering group for the recent national Action on Urology programme, and chairs the ongoing Urology Informed Decision-Making Project for the group. She also chairs the East of England Stem Cell Network and is a trustee of the UK Stem Cell Foundation.

Professor Martin Bobrow
Non-executive Director

Martin Bobrow studied medicine in South Africa. He worked in Edinburgh and Oxford, before becoming Professor of Medical Genetics in Amsterdam, London and then Cambridge in 1995. He retired from this post in 2005. Presently Deputy Chairman of the Wellcome Trust and Chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, he has been Chairman of ULTRA (Unrelated Living Transplant Regulating Authority), Chairman of COMARE (Department of Health Advisory Committee on radiation in the Environment), Deputy Chairman of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, and a member of the Medical Research Council and the Human Genetics Advisory Commission.

Mr Gerald Coteman
Non-executive Director

Gerald Coteman is Managing Partner of The Focus Group, business and management consultants. He was born and educated in Cambridge and has wide experience of the public sector. A former Cambridge City and Cambridgeshire County Councillor, he joined the, then, Cambridge Health Authority as a Board Member in the early 1980s. Over the past 20 years, he has acted in a professional capacity for a number of health and local government organisations and government departments in areas such as communications, feasibility & modelling, human resources, performance management and public consultation. He was a member of the Board at North Herts NHS Trust before joining the Addenbrooke's Board in 1999. He is also a Director of Cambridge Building Society.

Mr Colin Greenhalgh CBE, DL
Vice Chairman

Colin Greenhalgh was Principal of Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge, from 1984 to 2002. He was a Board Member of the Learning and Skills Development Agency from 1998 to 2002. From 1997 to 2001, he was a member of the Further Education Funding Council Quality Assurance Committee and he is an OFSTED inspector. Colin was awarded the OBE for services to education in 1997 and a CBE for services to further education in 2003. He became a Deputy Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire in 1999. In addition to his responsibilities at Addenbrooke's, Colin inspects leadership and management for OFSTED and works as an educational consultant for the Department of Education and Skills, the University of Cambridge and a number of schools and colleges. He is a Governor of a primary school. He was recently appointed as the Senior Independent Director for the Trust.

Mrs Shona Johnstone
Non-executive Director

Shona Johnstone has been a County Councillor since 1993. Between 1998 and 2005 she was lead member for Environment and Transport. She was a member of the National Cycling Strategy Board from it inception in 2002 until its abolition in 2005. In 2004 she was appointed to the Local Government Association Environment Board and following its restructure in 2006 is now a member of the Regeneration and Transport Board. In 2006 she was invited to join the Conservative Party's Quality of Life Commission, serving on both the transport and climate change sub groups. Since 2005 Shona has been the cabinet member for Children and Young People's Services at the County Council. She is also a member of the County Councils Network Children's Task Group and represents the County Council on both the Local Government Association and the County Councils network. Shona is a governor at Oakington Church of England (Aided) Primary School.

Mr Derek Jones
Non-executive Director

Derek recently held the post of director of strategic accounts for the BP Group. Prior to that he was director of strategic marketing and held a variety of other senior posts across the BP businesses. Derek is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Mr Jim Potter MBE FCIS
Non-executive Director

A Cambridge University graduate, Jim Potter was Chief Executive of Freeman Group plc headquartered in Stapleford from 1980 to 1996. He has lived in the Cambridge area since 1963 and he and other family members have been patients at Addenbrooke's. Jim is currently Chairman of the Cambridge Music Festival and a Parish Councillor for Balsham. He is Chairman of the Pilkington Energy Efficiency Trust and a former Director of the Energy Saving Trust. Jim received the MBE in 1986 for services to Energy Efficiency. He is also currently Non Executive Chairman of Digital Healthcare Ltd and a Trustee of Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust.

Regius Professor of Physic

Professor Patrick Sissons MD FRCP FRCPath FMedSci
Regius Professor of Physic

Professor Patrick Sissons undertook his postgraduate clinical and research training in nephrology and immunology in the Department of Medicine at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London.  He then spent three years as an NIH Fogarty Fellow at the Scripps Research Institute, where he acquired an interest in the immunology and pathogenesis of persistent virus infections.  He was appointed as Reader and then Professor of Infectious Disease at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London. In 1988 he moved to the Professorship of Medicine in the University of Cambridge and became Regius Professor of Physic and Head of the School of Clinical Medicine of the University of Cambridge in 2005.

Professor Sissons has served on numerous national grants committees and advisory bodies and was appointed a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998.

Ms Ann Alderton
FT Secretary

A qualified accountant and chartered secretary, Ann’s career has spanned FTSE100 companies, local government and the NHS, working in both finance and internal audit.  Before joining Cambridge University Hospitals in April 2007, she was Director of Audit Services in the NHS in Suffolk for 10 years, advising a number of healthcare organisations on corporate governance, risk management and compliance issues.
