About the Emergency Assessment Unit

ED ReceptionThe EAU opened it's doors for the first time on Monday 19 May 2006 when the Medical Admissions Unit and Medical Observation ward closed.

The EAU features several elements:

  • Level 2 is the Emergency Department and Clinical Decision Unit

  • Level 3 is the Children’s Observation unit

  • Level 4 Surgical Short Stay unit

  • Level 5 the Medical Short Stay unit

The EAU features improved access to radiology facilities and rapid pathology testing, plus rapid access clinic facilities for emergency patients.

Emergency Department

The Emergency Department is the front door to the hospital. Approximately 80,000 patients are assessed annually on their arrival in the Emergency Department (ED) by an integrated multi-professional team including doctors, nurses and other staff who make early decisions about treatment and care. This enables the team to decide whether patients can be discharged, managed within the EAU or need a specialist opinion or possible admission to the main hospital. As a result of the impact of the one front door at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, as well as a series of other new ways of working and new roles (such as Physicians Assistants) the admission rate at the Trust has reduced significantly.

The Emergency Department is currently staffed by 6 consultants, soon to be increased to 10 (to include 2 dedicated Consultant Radiologists) who are supported by a team of secretarial and administrative staff. There is a well established and motivated team of 16 Emergency Nurse Practitioners (ENPs) providing cover from 0800 to midnight 7 days a week. ENPs at Addenbrooke’s work in an autonomous role examining, investigating, treating and referring on to clinical specialties as required and are responsible for the complete management of the patients they treat and also encompass the teaching and training of ED nursing and medical staff in the management of minor trauma.

ED Reception
We have a dedicated front of house
team which is made up of 36
varied administrative staff who
contribute to the smooth
running reception area

Physicians Assistants play an important role in the patient’s journey through the Emergency Department by undertaking a variety of tasks including IV Acaccess, venepuncture, bladder scans, catheterisation, arterial blood gases, venous blood gases and MRSA swabbing. By completing many investigations prior to patients being seen by clinical staff, clinical management discussion can be made much earlier which contributes to the Trust achieving the 4 hour targets within the ED.

There is a separate Paediatric area within the ED where 25,000 children are treated each year. The area is staffed by 23 dedicated paediatric trained nurses, 2 Health Care Assistants and 1 play specialist.

This is a friendly, dynamic team committed to providing excellent standards of care to children and their families. Professional development is actively supported and motivated individuals are encouraged to apply. Paediatric staff also work in the Children's Observation Unit.

Clinical Decision Unit (CDU)

The CDU is a 24 hr facility that is used for patients who require a short period (<24hrs) of observation and/or treatment. It is also used for patients who need a short admission in order for the diagnosis or exclusion of specific conditions, so enabling appropriate placement of patients.

Children's Observation Unit (COU)

The 5-bedded COU is located on level 3. It is a facility that is used for paediatric patients requiring a short period of observation and/or treatment and is also used for patients who need a short admission in order for the diagnosis or exclusion of specific conditions, so enabling appropriate placement of patients.

Surgical Short stay Emergency Unit (SSEU)

The SSEU aims to accommodate patients requiring emergency admission for assessment and treatment of surgical conditions where the length of stay is estimated to be a maximum of 60 hours or two nights. Patients from a variety of disciplines will be accepted according to strict criteria. This ward is nurse led with input from each surgical team as appropriate.  This 26-bed ward fills the whole of level 4 of the EAU.

Short Stay Medical Unit (MSEU)

ED ReceptionThe MSEU aims to admit those patients seen in the EAU assessment area with acute medical problems predicted to have a length of stay of up to 72 hours, where this time is deemed adequate to complete the appropriate investigation and management of the patient so that they can be safely discharged for further out-patient investigation and follow-up if required.

EAU GP Liaison Team

The GP liaison team are the first point of contact when GPs refer patients requiring emergency admission to the Trust.  The GP liaison team accept emergency referrals to medicine and surgery from GPs.

START Team

The START team is a Community Care Team. Short Term Assessment Rehabilitation Team (START) - an alternative to hospital care.  Most patients prefer to stay in their own homes rather than having to go into hospital, and every effort is now being made to support people at home.
