PRESS RELEASE: 27 April 2005
Addenbrooke's has been named one of the UK's 'top 40 hospitals' for the fourth time in the annual Top Hospitals Awards run by CHKS, an international company specialising in measuring healthcare performance.

Gerald Coteman (centre), Non-Executive Director of Addenbrooke's, receiving the award from Graham Harries, Chief Executive of CHKS and Niall Dickson, Chief Executive of the King's Fund
The top-performing hospitals, out of a total of 120 hospitals across the UK, were rated on 17 different performance targets within the key areas of clinical effectiveness and outcomes, efficiency and patient-carer experience using hospital data for the 2004 calendar year. The targets included surveys of outpatients' and Accident and Emergency attenders' views, missed outpatient appointments and the proportion of surgical treatments to patients aged over 65, and this year's report showed the highest performance levels in the top 40 hospitals compared with previous years.
Malcolm Stamp, Addenbrooke's Chief Executive, said: "The award acknowledges the hard work of staff over the last year and their dedication to providing high quality patient care. Over the last 12 months we have become an NHS Foundation Trust, opened new and improved facilities such as our Genito-Urinary Medicine Clinic and made progress on our Elective Care, Genetics and Diabetes Centre. It's good news that the award reflects these milestones, and shows that we are continuing to provide top quality local, regional and specialist services to our patients."
Graham Harries, Chief Executive of CHKS commented: "It is impressive to see that this year’s 40 top hospitals have achieved the highest performance level of the five years in which we have been undertaking this study. Over this time the indicators have evolved and grown and now present a rounded view of UK Trusts, taking into account performance measurements across all areas and activities from mortality to outpatient treatment."
The top 40 hospitals are not ranked in order as each are considered to be achievers of high quality care.
Gerald Coteman, one of Addenbrooke's non-executive directors, received the award at a ceremony in Birmingham yesterday evening (26 April 2005).
