Medical student Henry returns to hospital who cared for him

Medical student Henry Hardy has returned to work at Addenbrooke's Hospital as part of his training, 21 years after being cared for here as a premature baby.

Henry was born at 27 weeks' gestation, and spent years in and out of hospital following complications related to his premature birth. He is now a fit and well young man, in his third year studying medicine at Southampton University.

Henry in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit

As part of his training, he spent a week working in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Addenbrooke's. Speaking about the experience, he said, "It's been brilliant. It's amazing being here 21 years on and to see all the work that goes on for children who were in a similar situation to my own. I have learnt so much I didn't know before. So much time and care goes into each child - it's amazing. And everyone's been so helpful and have spent so much time with me, so I've felt right at home."

Henry is now looking forward to qualifying so he can start working as a doctor. "In medicine, it's nice to know that you can make a difference to people's lives," he said.
