As home to one of the foremost cancer research centres in the UK, Addenbrooke's was chosen to demonstrate to participants in the 42nd London International Youth Science Forum how molecular analysis of tumours in the lab can be brought from the bench to the bedside and used to influence treatment of individual cancers.

Getting some 'hands-on' experience

During the visit on Thursday 4 August, the 40 students from 18 different countries discovered how novel radiotherapy techniques can be used to improve delivery of radiotherapy for breast and brain cancers. They also had some 'hands-on' experience at computerised radiotherapy planning.

Speaking about the visit, Dr Susan Harden, Consultant in Clinical Oncology, said: "The Addenbrooke's Oncology Department is delighted to have the opportunity to give young scientists from all over the world a taste of current translational and radiotherapy research going on in Cambridge. Our aim is to inspire the next generation of clinical scientists to make the breakthroughs that we hope will finally defeat cancer."
