The IT team from Addenbrooke's Hospital has scooped two awards in the prestigious IM2005 awards ceremony held in London on Thursday 1 December, which recognised excellence and innovation in business information management.

The team beat off tough competition from organisations including BT Global, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and the Department of Education, to win the Content Management category and to be commended for the Premier Project Award, again fighting off market leaders in industry, banking and commerce.

The awards recognised the hospital's achievement of creating, in conjunction with system supplier OITUK, an IT system which electronically produces, stores and delivers clinical information to clinicians wherever they are treating their patients.

The system, introduced in early 2004, was originally used to create correspondence between clinicians and then expanded to produce discharge letters to patients' GPs and hold clinical investigation results and reports. It means that vital information used to support clinical decision and care is available within seconds of its creation from any PC located within the hospital. All patient information is stored securely with access only available to those on a 'need-to-know' basis, in line with stringent security controls.

Dianne Nixon, IT Programme Manager at Addenbrooke's, said: "The team, which includes clinicians and secretarial staff as well as members of the IT department, is thrilled to receive these awards. Recent advances in technology have allowed IT to support the superb work carried out by clinicians and support staff at Addenbrooke’s to consistently improve patient care. It was an honour to have accepted the awards on behalf of the Trust in recognition of our continuing innovation in delivering 21st century healthcare to our local community."
