PRESS RELEASE: 28 February 2005

'Take 5!' for a clean and safe hospital

Today, Monday 28 February, Addenbrooke's is joining in with the national 'Think Clean Day' by launching 'Take 5!', the hospital's standards for keeping the hospital clean and safe for everybody who is cared for and works there.

Addenbrooke's Chief Nurse, Margaret Berry, said: "These standards are not new, we just want to remind everybody of the standards staff are expected to maintain in their everyday working lives. The five areas covered are hand hygiene, dress and uniform, protective equipment, bed space and bathrooms."

Staff will be able to talk to colleagues about cleanliness and infection at a special display with posters, leaflets and a 'glow and tell' machine that shows up how well you have washed your hands. All wards will be audited every three months to ensure the 'Take 5!' standards are carried out.

Continuing, Margaret Berry, said: "We have always worked together with our staff to maintain high standards of cleanliness, so the 'Think Clean' day represents another opportunity to reinforce this message. Providing clean, safe wards and clinical areas is a top priority for Addenbrooke's, and we hope that the day will help keep cleanliness top of the agenda for all who work here."
