Transplant specialists in Cambridge are urging the public to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor Register under the slogan 'Do It Now!' - making sure this is at least one New Year's resolution that doesn't get forgotten.
Research shows that 90% of the population support organ donation, but only 20% have got around to joining the NHS Organ Donor Register (ODR). With more than 6,000 people currently waiting for a transplant to save or dramatically improve their lives, there is an urgent need to increase the number of 'lifesavers' on the register.
Tina Broadley, Service Administrator for Transplant at Addenbrooke's, said: "We urgently need more people to think about organ donation, talk to their families and join the NHS Organ Donor Register. We know there is a huge amount of goodwill out there, we just need people to turn their good intentions into action, and we ask them to please 'Do It Now!'.
In 2004, 89 liver transplants (including four combined liver and kidney transplants), 80 kidney transplants and four combined pancreas and kidney transplants were performed at Addenbrooke's, a world leader in transplant surgery.
