PRESS RELEASE: 6 July 2005
Members of the press and public are invited to attend the July meeting of the
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on Thursday 7 July 2005
at 1730 hrs in the Hexagon, Frank Lee Centre, Addenbrooke's Hospital.
Addenbrooke's is governed by a Board of Directors and a Board of Governors,
which is elected by the Foundation Trust membership to represent their interests
at strategic level. Their role is to advise the Board of Governors on how its
business can meet the needs of members and the wider community, to act as guardians
to ensure that the NHS Foundation Trust acts in a way that fits with its statement
purpose and in a strategic capacity, to help plan the long-term direction of
the Trust.
Since the NHS Foundation Trust was established in July 2004, the governors have been making a real difference to the way the hospital works, helping to plan objectives for the coming year, for example, and meeting members at events in and outside the hospital to find out their views. Getting to know what patients and public members want from the hospital is central to what Addenbrooke's as a Foundation Trust stands for.
Agenda items
Presentation of Sister Winnie Matchett 1985 St. Valentine's Day Award
The Sister Winnie Matchett 1985 St. Valentine's Day Award will be presented
to the best student nurse of 2004. The successful candidate is chosen by Addenbrooke's
and the Homerton School of Health Studies (HSHS) for high academic achievement
and successful clinical placements throughout training.
Consultation document - the proposed redevelopment of Papworth Hospital
The Board will be asked to receive and consider the consultation document on
the proposed redevelopment of Papworth Hospital. A public consultation has recently
been launched to consider why a new hospital is needed, and explore the two
options for achieving this - redeveloping on the existing site or building a
new hospital and research institute on the Cambridge Biomedical campus (the
current Addenbrooke's site).
Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Strategic Health Authority - Health
Strategy
Dr Tony Jewell, Director of Clinical Services and Public Health at the NSC Strategic
Health Authority, will attend and give a presentation on the Authority's health
strategy for 2005-2010.
Infection Control
The Chief Nurse, Margaret Berry, will attend and give a presentation to update
the Board on the progress of initiatives to reduce hospital infections.
Membership Matters - Focus Group reports
Reports on Feeding and Nutrition and Communications and Patient Information
will be presented to the Board.
Earlier this year, governors surveyed patients about their hospital food, led a focus group meeting on the topic and spent time with staff to find out how the hospital caters for patients. The report highlights areas of good practice and makes suggestions for improvements.
Work carried out on Patient Information found that patients were pleased with most aspects of the care and information received from the hospital, but that there was room for improvement.
Membership Matters - Updated from Membership Working Group
The Membership Working Group will ask the Board to approve the recommendations
on membership. These include making clear the benefits that members bring to
Addenbrooke's, asking volunteers to help spread the membership message and finding
'membership champions' to encourage staff to engage the Trust on important issues.
