PRESS RELEASE: 5 July 2005

Hospital's success at 'Oscars' of transport industry

Addenbrooke's Hospital has been highly commended in the National Transport Awards in the category of ‘Business Contribution to Sustainable Transport’. Widely recognised as the ‘Oscars’ of the transport industry, the hospital successfully overcame stiff competition from local transport authorities, higher education establishments and the transport private sector to be shortlisted for the award. No other NHS Trust in the country was shortlisted for a National Transport Award this year.

Speaking about the nomination Wyn Hughes, Service Development Manager for Estates and Facilities at the hospital, said: “The ‘Access to Addenbrooke’s’ initiative was one of the first ‘green’ travel plans to be established in the UK, and is now widely recognised nationally as an exemplar for travel plans. The Trust has been extremely successful in encouraging access to the site by non-car modes and in promoting alternative travel choices”.

The Addenbrooke's Shuttle - there are lots of ways of getting to the hospital

Addenbrooke's was the first NHS Trust in the country to procure and run a public bus service – the Addenbrooke’s Shuttle - and its partnership with Stagecoach and the local councils has made a considerable contribution to increasing the number of staff using buses to access the site. In 1993, seven out of 10 staff arrived on site by car – this has reduced to just four in 10 by last year. Half of all staff now either cycle or catch a bus to work.

Wyn Hughes added: “The Access to Addenbrooke’s initiative is a ‘live’ initiative which will evolve as the site expands. With the prospect of real-time bus information at bus stops, new bus routes, more secure cycle and motor cycle parking, a new access road from the M11 and the possibility that Cambridge Guided Bus will come onto site, accessing the Addenbrooke’s campus should get easier in the future”.
