PRESS RELEASE: 10 June 2005
World famous musicians Nicholas Daniel (oboe), Joy Farrall (clarinet) and Sarah Burnett (bassoon) of Britten Sinfonia will be performing at Addenbrooke’s Hospital on Monday 13 June 2005 at a free concert open to everyone in the hospital's chapel between 1300 and 1330.
The wind trio is performing as part of Britten Sinfonia residency programme based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. The residency has been set up by Addenbrooke’s Arts project as part of its aim to ensure that the environment at the hospital remains a positive and uplifting one for patients and visitors.
All the musicians have achieved recognition in their careers. Nicholas Daniel won the BBC's Young Musician of the Year Competition aged 18, and since then has been a guest artist with every BBC orchestra and has appeared a number of times at the BBC Proms. Joy Farrall is an accomplished performer and is currently Professor of Clarinet at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Sarah Burnett is no stranger to Cambridge as she read music at St Catherine's College, and now plays with several orchestras all over the country, and also appears regularly in broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM.
Britten Sinfonia have been in residence at Addenbrooke's since summer 2004. In that time they have run music workshops and concerts on the children’s Wards C2 and D2 and in the Lewin Stroke and Rehabilitation Unit. The aim of these workshops is to create new music, focusing on each individual creating their own world of sound. These new pieces of music include instrumental pieces recorded live, as well as sounds (such as patients' favourite sounds), which are recorded onto CD and given to the patients to take away with them.
Monday's concert has been generously funded by the Arts Council, Cambridge University Press, Arts and Business and Addenbrooke's Charities.
The musicians will also be performing on the wards at the following times:
1100–1120 Ward D2 (children's ward)
