PRESS RELEASE: 18 March 2005
An exhibition featuring the work of local artist Rhea Quien entitled ‘Living Matter in Rhythm’ is currently on display at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

The paintings are inspired by movement and light in nature, some of them depicting
translucent insect wings, bone or muscle, jungle life, flames, wispy clouds
or flowing water, while others are almost images from science fiction.
Speaking about her work, Rhea Quien said: “Ever since my early childhood
I have been inspired by the effects of movement and light. In quiet states of
mind, unusual effects of light can become apparent to the observer of nature.
I view the paintings as forms of energy, which underlie the development of organic
matter out of sound and light. It was a thrilling experience to paint these
canvases."

The inspiration for the exhibition came from a trip to the Alps, where Rhea observed subtle light effects in running water, cloud formations and the play of light and shade. Later it was possible to create similar effects in the studio and photograph some of these images. Rhea calls these ‘Light Images’, and her next project is to produce a film of them.
