PRESS RELEASE: 3 November 2005

Addenbrooke's re-appoints non-executive director

Colin Greenhalgh

Colin Greenhalgh

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Addenbrooke's Hospital) is pleased to announce the re-appointment of Mr Colin Greenhalgh as non-executive director of the Trust Board of Directors for a three-year term from 1 November 2005.

Mr Greenhalgh will also continue as vice-chairman of the Trust Board of Directors and Board of Governors. In addition, he is chairman of the Clinical and Corporate Governance Committee and of the Trust's Clinical Ethics Forum. He also serves on the Audit Committee, the Remuneration Committee and working groups concerned with campus developments, the creation of a new learning centre and liaison with the University of Cambridge. His remuneration will be £14,000 per annum.

Colin was principal of Hills Road Sixth Form College from 1984 until his retirement in August 2002, since when he has worked as an educational consultant for the Department for Education and Skills, Cambridge University, the Centre for Excellence in Leadership, the Association of Colleges, the Ogden Trust and individual schools and colleges. Colin is also an Ofsted inspector responsible for leadership and management. Colin was awarded the CBE in 2003 for services to further education and became a Deputy Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire in 1998.

NHS Foundation Trusts have a Board of Governors and a Board of Directors. The Board of Directors comprises both full-time executive and part-time non-executive directors, the latter chosen because of their experience and links with the local community. The role of the Board of Directors is to set the overall corporate goals for the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and to be responsible for the operational management of the Hospital.

The majority of members of the Board of Governors are elected by the membership of the NHS Foundation Trust and collectively all governors are responsible for the strategic direction of the organisation, as agreed with the Board of Directors. The Board of Governors has the power to appoint the chairman and non-executive directors. The Board will be consulted on and influence decisions regarding the future direction of the NHS Foundation Trust. They will also consider the annual reports and accounts and receive other information about the NHS Foundation Trust, and be responsible for appointing an auditor to inspect the Trust's financial accounts.

Speaking about the re-appointment of Colin Greenhalgh, Dr Mary Archer, Chairman of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "I am delighted that Colin has been re-appointed to the Board. His wealth of skills and experience have always been a real asset to us, and I am sure will continue to be over the coming years."
