PRESS RELEASE: 18 November 2005

Children learning about their diabetes at Addenbrooke's with Claire Pesterfield, Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse
For the fourth year running, the Eleanor Cripps Diabetes and Endocrine Centre
based at Addenbrooke's Hospital will be holding its popular study day offering
help, support and advice to patients with diabetes, their partners and families.
The study day called Diabetes: not to be sniffed at! (as it includes a session on inhaled insulins) will be held in the Clinical School on the Addenbrooke's campus on Saturday 19 November. The programme covers a wide range of topics including sessions on: obesity – prevention and treatment; glycaemic index foods; a patient’s perspective on living with diabetes, and DAFNE – Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating - the hospital’s course which teaches patients to self-manage their insulin regime to fit around their lifestyle and food choices. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions of the panel of experts.
Familiar face Dr Sean Dinneen who worked in the centre for four years is returning for the day from University of Ireland in Galway to give his session on inhaled insulins – which is a new treatment still being developed.
Speaking about the study day, Jackie Reynolds, Diabetes Specialist Nurse, said: "The day will be packed full of lively talks by clinicians and patients, and will also offer people the chance to meet other patients or families on an informal basis. The range of interesting subjects reflects the excellent work that goes on at Addenbrooke's, so I would really encourage anyone interested to come along."
At Addenbrooke's diabetes care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team including doctors, diabetes nurse specialists, midwives, podiatrists (foot specialists), dietitians and support staff. The emphasis is not just on clinical care, but also moral support and education, and patients are taught how to manage their diabetes for themselves.
Anyone interested in the work of the centre or wanting to attend the study day (places are going fast) can contact Michaela Wilson on 01223 596103.
