On Thursday 1 December, consultant haematologist Dr Trevor Baglin will be presenting a ‘Medicine for Members’ talk, entitled Blood clotting: walking the tightrope. The talk will start at 1830 hours in the William Harvey Lecture Theatre in the Clinical School at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Hills Road, Cambridge and is open to all Foundation Trust members. The talk will offer members the opportunity to learn, first-hand, all about ‘coagulation’. It is necessary that blood remains fluid within the circulation but clots at sites of vascular damage. This fine balance can be disturbed by a variety of genetic and environmental factors leading to either increased bleeding (haemophilia) or increased clotting (thrombophilia). Understanding the basis of the balance and how it is altered by genetic and environmental influences allows us to design strategies that avoid bleeding and thrombosis at times of risk. It also allows us to manipulate the balance with drugs so as to prevent and treat these problems and ultimately provide a rationale for the development of designer drugs with ever better efficacy and safety profiles. If you are interested in attending and finding out more about this fascinating subject, just phone to book a place. Tickets are free of charge and can be reserved by phoning the NHS Foundation Trust Membership Office on 01223 256 256. If you are not a member, but would like to find out more about NHS Foundation Trust status and membership, please call 01223 256256 or log on to www.addenbrookes.org.uk/foundation
