the award, Dr John Bailey, Lenor/Proctor and Gamble, Two midwives from the Rosie Hospital have won a prestigious national award in recognition of a 'pathway of maternity care' they set up for pregnant women at the Oakington Reception Centre. Lesley Bennett and Joanna Goddard won the 'Reducing social exclusion' category at the Royal College of Midwives awards held in London on Tuesday 15 November. The scheme, established in June this year, ensures that pregnant women at the centre receive antenatal care in a 'one stop' appointment with a midwife. They have blood tests and a scan, and are told how to access antenatal care after leaving the centre, taking with them a set of medical notes to aid management of their future care. Speaking about the project, Joanna Goddard said: "The beauty of the scheme is that it's a very simple idea, and it hasn't diverted resources from any other aspect of the service. It's also a real example of partnership, working closely with hospital ultrasonographers, clerical and medical staff, and the medical centre at Oakington, to name but a few. "It feels fantastic to win - it's so nice to have a pat on the back from our own profession!" Dame Karlene Davis, General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives said: "I congratulate Lesley and Joanna for the dedication and commitment they have shown in developing this pathway of care for this very vulnerable group of women. "This is a fantastic example of midwives identifying a group
of women who were not previously being cared for adequately because
they had often moved on before follow-up appointments came round.
As a result of Lesley and Joanna's enlightened approach, these women's
immediate maternity needs are now being met in a single visit to
the antenatal clinic."
