PRESS RELEASE: 9 September 2005

Yet another success for hospital's travel plan!

Addenbrooke's Hospital has been recognised once again for its work helping patients, visitors and staff travel to and from the campus. On Tuesday 6 September the hospital was presented with the Travel Plan Excellence Award at the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Travel Plan Excellence Awards, which recognise the hard work that employers are putting into implementing travel plans to encourage their employees to use more sustainable modes of travel when possible.

This is the second award the hospital has won this year for the efforts it puts into providing and promoting alternative methods of transport to the campus. In July, Addenbrooke's was highly commended in the National Transport Awards in the category of ‘Business Contribution to Sustainable Transport’.

Speaking about the award Wyn Hughes, Service Development Manager for Estates and Facilities at the hospital, said: “Gaining this local recognition for the work that we are doing to reduce the impact of travel to the site is immensely important to the Trust. If all organisations and businesses in Cambridgeshire followed our lead, there would be a significant reduction in congestion on the county’s roads – we will be working hard to encourage this over the coming years”.

The Travel Plan sets out how Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Addenbrooke's) is working to ensure that a range for travel options are available for patients, visitors and staff travelling to its campus in Cambridge. The Trust takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously, and aims to reduce the demand for car travel by promoting and supporting alternative modes. These include:

• Walking to the campus.
• Bus - the campus is served by up to 60 buses an hour. The hospital also runs its own bus service - the Addenbrooke's Shuttle - running from Trumpington Park and Ride.
• Park and Ride - Cambridge is served by five Park and Ride sites - four of which are directly accessible from Addenbrooke's.
• Taxi - taxi firms can be called from our main receptions, and we have pull-off areas for taxis to drop visitors off safely.
• Cycle - We are well served by cycle routes and there are more than 1,300 cycle parking spaces on site.
• Train - Cambridge Railway Station is about two miles from Addenbrooke's.

In 1993, seven out of 10 staff arrived on site by car – this has reduced to just four in 10 by last year. Half of all staff now either cycle or catch a bus to work.

Wyn Hughes added: “The Travel Plan initiative is a ‘live’ initiative which will evolve as the site expands. With the prospect of real-time bus information at bus stops, new bus routes, more secure cycle and motor cycle parking, a new access road from the M11 and the possibility that Cambridge Guided Bus will come onto site, accessing the Addenbrooke’s campus should get easier in the future”.
