Charlotte Reid with City and Guild award and certificate

Maternity care assistant Charlotte Reid from Addenbrooke's Hospital has been awarded a 'Medal for Excellence' by City and Guilds for the work she put in to completing her NVQ in Care.

Charlotte was nominated for the award by clinical assessor Liz Crookes because she has dyslexia and completed the NVQ course in only six months, rather than the full two years.

As part of her course, Charlotte wrote a booklet and produced a poster on the five senses of a newborn baby, which are both available in the nursery on Lady Mary Ward for parents to read.

Speaking about the 'Medal for Excellence', Charlotte said: "I was really pleased to hear that I had won the award."

Maternity Care Assistants support midwifery staff and nurses, helping the department to run smoothly and providing a flexible way of working for candidates.

The role was developed to support Maternity Services, which have become much busier at the Rosie over the past few years. By providing this support, Maternity Care Assistants help free up midwives and nurses for duties that only they can perform. Qualified Maternity Care Assistants are able to work in all areas of Maternity Services under supervision, and as part of their duties offer help, support and advice to parents.

Charlotte explained: "I love my job. It involves all aspects of care for women including getting their breakfast, doing their observations, helping with washing, baby bathing and helping mums look after their babies."

Charlotte received her award at a special ceremony in Exning on Tuesday 21 February 2006. The judges praised Charlotte’s achievement, pointing out that she was up against national competition and the only award winner from the health services.
