The final of the Miss Little Philippines contest, organised by members of Cambridge's Filipino community, some of whom work at Addenbrooke's, took place recently. The winner was Cylk Nicholle Pilapil, who was crowned by Cambridge Mayor John Hipkin and Blossom Gavino of BPI Remittance UK Plc. Jasmine Caycel Habacon was named First Princess, and Rogny Bethany Buenida was Second Princess. The contest was part of Christmas celebrations organised by the Filipino community. Addenbrooke's employs around 500 nurses recruited from the Philippines, with whom the government has an agreement. The nurses have settled in well to both hospital and community life, and were recently featured in The Guardian in a supplement on multicultural Britain. Noel Cruz, a nurse on Ward C9's (transplant) high dependency unit, and a leading member of the Cambridge Filipino community said: "Addenbrooke's and other hospitals have opened the door for us to work to the highest standards of care, and have given us the opportunity to explore our nursing skills, compete on the global market and develop our nursing innovation."
