Kara at her book-signing

Young writer Kara Siert hosted a book-signing session on 23 June 2006 at Addenbrooke’s Hospital where she is being treated as a patient.

Ten-year-old Kara has always been a prolific writer, and has just published her first book with the help of the Dreams Come True charity and arima Publishing.

Kara wrote most of the stories in Tales of Cunburra and Other Stories at the age of nine and a half. Then, just weeks before her tenth birthday, she was diagnosed with bone cancer in her right arm, and began treatment at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Even though faced with this serious illness, her bright smile and loving personality remain unchanged, and she continues to write and draw with artistic energy and passion.

The book tells of the land of Cunburra, where the reader encounters talking animals including a dragon and giant tigers. The main character, Nancy, adopts animals and experiences thrilling adventures. In Kara’s Other Stories, she tells of more escapades of animals and heart-warming people as they learn about love and forgiveness.

Speaking about Kara’s work, Dr Mary Archer, chairman of Addenbrooke’s Hospital, said: “I have so much enjoyed meeting Kara’s wonderful cast of animals, particularly the heroic cat Scissors and the little tiger Tigressida. We wish Kara every success with her writing career, and a speedy return to full health.”
