Addenbrooke's Hospital is top of the region for patients aged 50 and over, says research published today (21 March), and has also been ranked as one of the best performing hospitals in England.

The research by Dr Foster was carried out for Saga's 'Guide to Hospitals in Your Region', which rated hospitals in England, Wales and Scotland on four key factors that people aged 50 and over find important:

  • Quality of care in each hospital - mortality rates and number of doctors and nurses

  • Patient experience - including cleanliness and confidence in the doctors

  • Infection control - incidence of MRSA

  • Access to services - including inpatient and outpatient waiting times

Addenbrooke's scored particularly highly for patients' confidence in the doctors and scored credits for its over-50s mortality rate, staffing levels and its MRI scan wait.

Margaret Berry, Addenbrooke's chief nurse, said: "We are delighted to be recognised as a top hospital for the over 50s. This reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff, and our aim of providing a first class service for our patients. We are committed to continuing this good work, and developing services around our patients' needs."

Andrew Goodsell, Chief Executive of Saga, said: "This survey provides a snapshot of how the NHS is meeting the needs of today's over 50s. It is encouraging to see the majority of hospitals performing well, and this is a tribute to the dedication of NHS staff. I hope that by commissioning this independent review and highlighting the top performers such as Addenbrooke's Hospital, we will help people, along with their GPs, make informed choices about their healthcare needs."
