Dr Mary Archer, Chairman of the Addenbrooke’s Board of Directors, is this year’s recipient of the Annual Award for Chemistry from the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland .
The award, which was presented today in Dublin, recognises Dr Archer’s international reputation as a chemist who is able to communicate the importance of chemistry and chemical research to everyday life.
Dr Archer taught chemistry in the University of Cambridge for ten years before developing a wider portfolio of interests. She became a non-executive director of Addenbrooke’s NHS Trust in 1993, vice-chairman of the Trust in 1999 and chairman in 2002.
She said: “Chemistry provides us with a host of useful and life-saving products. Chemists have a great story to tell, which is too little heard. I am honoured to receive this award from the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland , which recognises the importance of popularising this queen of the sciences.”
Dr Gareth Goodier, Chief Executive of Addenbrooke’s, said: “Mary works enormously hard for the benefit of the hospital and its patients. Her background as a chemist means she has a solid understanding of how scientific developments help us improve the care we can provide. We are delighted that she has been recognised with this award.”
