BREAST cancer survivor Peggy Rose is preparing to host a dinner for family and friends to help raise thousands of pounds for a new research unit at Addenbrooke's Hospital.

On Saturday, October 6, she will be one of hundreds of people welcoming guests to a Pink Rose Dinner.

Over the past three years the dinners have raised more than £180,000 for the Cambridge Breast Unit, and it is hoped this year's event will raise £70,000 for a revolutionary ultrasound scanner for the new breast cancer research unit, scheduled for completion in October 2007.

Peggy, a former breast cancer patient at Addenbrooke's, is hosting her fourth annual Pink Rose Dinner to say thank you for the care she has received.

The 64-year-old, of Little Downham, was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago after a routine mammogram. She needed to have a mastectomy on her left breast and a lump removed from her right breast. Three months after the operation Peggy started three weeks of daily radiotherapy treatment. Since then she has taken medication every day, and will need to do so for another year, and re-visits the breast unit annually for check-ups.

She said: "It is rather mind-blowing when you are first diagnosed with breast cancer, but the breast unit is terrific and I have received such fantastic service from the staff, who are always so nice. Hosting a Pink Rose Dinner is my way of giving something back to them."

Peggy and her husband Mike, 67, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in May, and he will be at her side at the Pink Rose Dinner along with her son Ian, daughter-in-law Sarah, and two grandchildren, Becky, nine, and Emily, six.

Peggy, a former accounts manager, urged people to go for check-ups. She said: "Routine mammograms are the best thing since sliced bread. Even after they told me what they had found it was so small I couldn't feel anything unusual, so it would have been a long time before I would have noticed. I would encourage every woman to go to their routine mammogram."
