Addenbrooke’s has scooped a prestigious national award in recognition of its family-friendly policies for staff.

The hospital was chosen for this year’s Working Families Silver Service Award for its many initiatives to embrace the needs of the older worker. Addenbrooke’s was particularly singled out thanks to our flexible policies which make the transition from working to retired life as easy as possible.

Dr Gareth Goodier, Chief Executive of the hospital said: “Addenbrooke’s employs people from all walks of life regardless of age, and our outstanding flexible retirement programme gives staff approaching retirement age the opportunity to take a step back without completely stopping. Staff are able to reduce their hours and responsibilities enabling a better work-life balance while the hospital maintains a pool of experienced workers.

“We value the older worker as an important resource within the hospital and this award is an acknowledgement of our commitment to maintain our relationship with them. The Trust invests a great deal in the wellbeing of our staff and we are delighted to have had our hard work recognised”

Keith Day, a former director of the Trust, who is now employed in a different role on a part time basis said: “Being able to ‘wind down’ has meant that I didn’t have to retire completely. I can still use my expertise at work but also have time to pursue my outside interests.”

Notes for editors:

Our Opportunities scheme encourages recruitment from all sections of society including BME, disabled and refugee groups and young and older workers.

Our Flexible retirement policy allows staff the opportunity to retire early and return to work on a part time basis or at a lower level of responsibility. This lets the worker ‘wind down’ while keeping a pool of expertise in the hospital.

Flexible working provides a variety of different working patterns to suit the employee and help create a better balance between work and life. Staff can choose any sscheme from term-time only to split shifts or flexi-time.
