Why is Long Road being closed?

A new underpass needs to be put into place under Long Road and to do this the road needs to be closed for six and a half weeks.

The underpass will provide a 3-metre shared cycle path and footway next to the Guided Busway. The busway and cycle path/footway will run from Cambridge Railway Station to Trumpington Park & Ride and Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

The alternative to closing Long Road would be to use temporary traffic management on the road for 26 weeks that would involve traffic lights to control single-flow traffic.
Temporary traffic lights on Long Road for 26 weeks would cause more disruption than closing the road during the summer holidays.

The road will be closed during the quietest time of the year, when the majority of schools and colleges are closed and there are fewer people traveling to work.

What about ambulances and other emergency vehicles?

All of the emergency services have been consulted on the closure.

The Ambulance Service has agreed that full closure of Long Road for a short period is preferable to 26 weeks of temporary traffic lights.
The Council has agreed to fund an additional emergency response vehicle situated close to the M11.
