Addenbrooke’s research team Dr Charlotte Coles and Miss Jenny Wilkinson have recently scooped Breast Cancer Campaign’s ‘Research Team of the Year 2007’ award for their work in improving radiotherapy for breast cancer patients. The team is testing a new form of radiotherapy called IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy) which aims to reduce such side effects of radiotherapy as toxicity. The results of the trials could give major benefits to breast cancer patients. The introduction of radiographer-led planning will also improve working practice across the field, having already reduced waiting times at Addenbrookes. The award was presented at the House of Lords on 9 May by Baroness Fookes and Professor Alastair Thompson , Chair of Campaign’s Scientific Advisory Board. Professor Thompson said, “Charlotte and Jenny’s research has already made a huge impact on the treatment of breast cancer patients in Cambridge and it is hoped that the results of this trial will be eventually rolled out nationwide.”
