Children with cleft lips and palates enjoyed a summer party at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

The Cambridge branch of the Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA) organised the event for children who have been treated at the hospital.

One of the children attending was Cara Tompkins, six, who has been receiving treatment at the hospital since birth.
Cara’s mum Andrea said “We are so grateful to all the staff at Addenbrooke’s for the wonderful care Cara has received over the years.”

“Thanks to CLAPA for organising the party. It is a great way for Cara to meet other children who have been treated by the team”.

The CLAPA Cambridge team were also celebrating a £20,000 donation from the Newmarket Guineas Ball.

One in every 600-700 children in the UK is born with a cleft lip and/or palate.

Dr Anna Zeffertt, clinical psychologist for the cleft lip and palate team, said “CLAPA Cambridge is doing a fantastic job to bring children with cleft lip and palate problems together who would otherwise meet in a clinic or ward setting.”

“Families get a great deal out of meeting and sharing information. It is a good step towards breaking down misconceptions that exist about the condition.”
