Our previous campaign for staff (from 25 November 2004):

Follow the 10 easy steps to help reduce infection:

  1. Clean your hands when entering or leaving a ward or clinic, even if you don't have any patient contact.

  2. Clean your hands before and after every patient contact.

  3. Keep your working area clean, tidy and clutter-free.

  4. Be seen to be clean - let patients and visitors see you clean your hands.

  5. Check that there's always alcohol hand rub in dispensers, and report any empties straightaway.

  6. Encourage patients and visitors to use the alcohol hand rubs.

  7. If you see something that needs tidying, report it.

  8. Be able to explain what we are doing to reduce hospital infections and reassure those who are concerned - read and hand out the information sheet on this website.

  9. If you wear a uniform, check the policy and stick to it.

  10. Leave infections at home - don't bring them to work. Seek advice from your manager or GP.

Clinical staff: please refer to your more detailed infection control guidelines.
