Smoke-free consultation

The consultation took place during October 2005.

Your health, your choice, your say...

Smoking is the single greatest cause of preventable illness and early death in the UK. Of course, whether you smoke or not is your choice. The question is around where smokers smoke.

There is a national move towards making the NHS smoke free by the end of 2006. This means that there will be no smoking in and around any NHS buildings from 2007.

We asked what you think:

  • Do you believe that becoming smoke-free is an important issue?

  • Do you believe that the whole Addenbrooke's site should become smoke-free?

You were asked to 'share your views'

  • by filling in our online questionnaire

  • by attending our public focus group

What happened next?

Consultation period ended 28 October 2005.

  • November 2005: analysis of findings undertaken

  • December 2005: feedback of findings published on this website

  • 15 February 2006: new policy announced

  • 8 March 2006: new policy introduced and implemented on National No Smoking Day

Consultation results

Majority for non-smoking site

The Addenbrooke's smoke-free consultation was carried out during October 2005 to gain opinion on the proposal that Addenbrooke’s could become a smoke-free site. From the 1,684 responses the preferred option is that the whole site should be a non-smoking environment.

The feedback received came from staff, public, patient groups and other site users. The results are as follows:

  • 13% believe restrictions should only be within hospital buildings

  • 33% believe the ban on smoking should cover all buildings on site

  • 52% believe the whole site including grounds should be smoke-free

The smoke-free policy, which was implemented on 8 March, is now available, see the links on the left.

Thank you to all staff for their contributions and to the team who were involved with this project for their hard work.
