Following public consultation Addenbrooke’s site is now smoke-free.
Reason for development
• The public health white paper, Choosing Health, makes clear commitment to a smoke free NHS by the end of 2006
• Second hand smoke – breathing other people’s tobacco smoke – has now been shown to cause lung cancer and heart disease in non smokers, as well as many other illnesses
• Giving up smoking reduces a patient’s risk of complications and delays in recovery
Scope
The new policy covers all Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust premises. This includes all buildings and grounds, the bus station and car parks. The Frank Lee centre is not included in the policy, although trustees of the centre are considering the Trust’s decision. Residencies are exempt from the policy as they are people’s homes.
Smoking cessation support
For information and advice on stopping smoking, contact the NHS smoking helpline on 0800 1690 169. The Occupational Health Department and local GPs can also provide advice and support.
Non compliance
Patients and visitors who refuse to comply with this policy may be asked to leave the site.
Staff who do not comply with the policy will be interviewed by their line manager and referred to Occupational Health for support and advice as appropriate. Failure to comply with the policy may lead to disciplinary procedures.
Contractors
This policy will be a contractual condition as part of any tenders and contracts with the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Existing contracts will be modified as soon as possible.
Patients
Patients will be told about the new policy when they are admitted and prior information will also be available on the website and patient information leaflets. GP practices will also be told about the new policy.
Staff supplementary terms of contract
This policy requires a change to terms and conditions of contract. The unions have been fully involved in this change and you will receive formal notification in March 2006 pay packets.
