Under the Research Governance Framework, all research taking place within the NHS must have management approval from the ‘host organisation’. This means that any research that uses NHS patients, their data or tissue, staff, premises or resources (i.e. pharmacy or laboratories) must have obtained the approval of the relevant NHS Trust as well as ethics approval before the study can commence.
This applies to all studies including those deemed SSA exempt by Ethics.
The Research Governance Framework outlines the principles of good practice that apply to all research undertaken in the NHS. Its aim is to promote quality research.
The framework does this by describing:
- Arrangements to define and communicate clear quality standards
- Delivery systems to ensure that these standards are met
- Arrangements to monitor implementation of the framework and the standards nationally
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust must demonstrate its adherence to this framework, to reassure patients, service users and care professionals of the quality of its services and to assure the Trust’s reputation as a high quality research organisation.
