Public involvement in research

Involving the public in NHS research is becoming an increasing priority for healthcare organisations. Active involvement of the public in healthcare research rather than simply as ‘subjects’ of research can identify different priorities and perspectives and ensure that the research being carried out meets the needs of the community.

Why get involved?

To improve treatment services

To identify problems related to the treatment or service

To identify gaps in knowledge related to specific treatments or conditions

To ensure that future research is relevant to the needs of a specific group of people

How to get involved

Further information can be found at INVOLVE which promotes public involvement in NHS, public health and social care research.
A new website, People in Research, helps members of the public make contact with organisations that want to actively involve them in clinical research. The heart of the website is a searchable database of information about organisations or groups that look for members of the public to get actively involved in their work. It has been developed by the UK Clinical Research Collaboration, INVOLVE and others.
