The Paediatric Unit (Children's Services) at Addenbrooke’s is a regional service for many specialities, and the local paediatric centre for the population of Cambridge and surrounding areas.

We admit approximately 3,500 patients a year and, therefore, offer a wide range of experience in both children's medicine and surgery.

The service consists of:

  • three paediatric wards (C3, C2, D2)

  • a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU)

  • a paediatric day unit

  • a children’s observation unit (COU) and emergency assessment

  • a child development centre (CDC)

  • an outpatient clinic (Clinic 6)

  • a paediatric recovery area

  • Educational services for inpatients

One parent or carer is welcome to stay with their child should they need admission to the unit. Every bed has an accompanying parent bed. In addition, for those longer-term patients or those families who have a child in the PICU, The Sick Children’s Trust offers accommodation on site in Acorn house.

In addition to the dedicated medical and nursing staff we have a team of support staff including ward clerks, ward assistants and domestic staff. All help to maintain the smooth and efficient running of the service, ensuring the wards are clean and well maintained.

All staff working within all the areas are committed to a high level of care for both the patients and their families.

We also work closely with our colleagues in Neonatal Services providing services for the youngest patients at Addenbrooke's.

Staffing: administrative staff, doctors, domestic staff, nursery nurses, phlebotomists, physiotherapists and other therapy staff, play specialists, RSCN/RN child nurses, scientific staff and technical support.
