Facilities for older children and teenagers

There is a school for young people staying with us at Addenbrooke's, which is based on wards C2 and D2.

Our aim is to help children and young people with their education, so that when they get back to their own school, they don’t feel left behind.

Does everyone have to attend the school?

The nurses and play leaders let the teachers know if the child/young person is well enough.

What staff do you have?

We have teachers and/or a teaching assistants for the relevant age group (ie primary or secondary).

When will I meet them?

Typically, we will say hello to the patient on their second day in hospital, offer them some work on their third day and then teach them from the next day onwards.

What schoolwork will you cover?

Patients can bring their own schoolwork with them and the teaching staff will help, or they can follow the teachers' planned curriculum. For primary school, this includes numeracy, literacy and science. For secondary school it includes maths, English and a variety of other subjects.

We can also help with SAT’s revision and GCSE coursework.

What facilities do you have?

We have laptops for patients to use, which have (limited) access to the Internet.
