Welcome to the ward.

We hope your stay will be comfortable. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions. If you or your relative wish to speak to your consultant or other medical staff, please ask for an appointment to be made.

On your arrival: When you are first admitted, you will meet a member of the medical and nursing staff as soon as possible. If there is a short delay, please bear with us – we might be waiting for another patient to be discharged or be busy caring for other patients.

Useful things to bring/have with you: Our patients find the following make their stay more pleasant:

  • For washing etc: eg soap (in a dish), flannel, hand towel, (shaving equipment), tooth/denture care, hairbrush/comb,

  • Skin care: eg talc, wet wipes, moisturisers, deodorant;

  • Clothing: eg nightclothes (two sets), slippers (not flip-flops), light dressing gown, comfortable day clothes and underwear,

  • For amusement: eg small change, newspapers, magazines, puzzles/crosswords, pen and paper;

  • For refreshment: eg fruit squashes, fruit juice, yoghurts, boiled sweets.

Your belongings and valuables: You will have only a small bedside locker to store your personal belongings, so please bring only essential items with you to hospital. We can take care of small amounts of money in the hospital safe but, if possible, please ask visitors to take care of any valuables for you.

Cards: We also request that you do not stick any cards onto the walls as this damages the paintwork. You will find a board behind your bed where you can put your cards.

Clothing and laundry: We encourage patients to wear daytime clothes when they feel able. We do not, however, have facilities to launder your clothes routinely. It is very helpful if relatives can take responsibility for this.

Moving and handling: During your stay in hospital an assessment will be made to determine the most appropriate way of moving you during your treatment according to your needs. This may mean that you are moved using special equipment such as a hoist or a sliding sheet. If you have any concerns about this, then please talk to the nurse looking after you.

Food and drink:
We will bring you three meals each day (breakfast, lunch and supper) and hot drinks at intervals. When you arrive, we will explain how this works and ask you if you have any special requirements. Please check with nursing staff before you consume any food or drink that has been brought in for you or purchased in the hospital. We are unable to microwave food for patients due to health and safety regulations.

Toilets on the wards are for the use of patients only.

End of your stay with us: Your staff will warn you in advance of when you are likely to be discharged from the ward and will discuss with you how you will get home etc. There are strict criteria for hospital transport.
