The Cambridge Surgical HPB unit sees and treats patients with the following conditions:

• Liver tumours (benign, malignant both primary and secondary)
• Pancreatic tumours (both benign and malignant)
• Biliary diseases (cancer of the biliary tree and benign stone disease)
• Liver and Pancreatic trauma
• Biliary injuries following surgery
• Pancreatitis (acute and chronic)
• Abdominal endocrine tumours (pancreatic and adrenal)
• Gall stones requiring surgery (Laparoscopic cholecystectomy)

There are four consultant surgeons, one Specialist Nurse, one year-5/6 HPB SpR, one Senior Clinical Fellow in HPB surgery, one Senior House officer and two House officers in the firm.

All the consultant surgeons are also involved in liver transplantation and work very closely with Hepatologists, Gastroenterologists, Radiologists, Oncologists, Pathologists and palliative care specialists.

Urgent referral with suspected HPB cancer patients are seen in the next clinic (Wednesdays and Thursdays). Consultants are always happy to discuss patients anytime. They can be contacted on their long range pagers directly or through hospital switchboard or via their respective secretaries. Most of the work in the unit is targeted towards prompt management of complex cancers affecting liver, biliary tree and the pancreas. The team also cares for majority of the patients admitted with acute/chronic pancreatitis and gall stones. Wherever appropriate, an attempt to proceed to definitive surgery during the same admission will be made.
