Preventing oral disease: How to stay safe in the sun

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a comprehensive service relating to conditions of the face, mouth and jaws, including a routine assessment and treatment service for common oral surgical conditions.

Specialist areas of surgery include those for:

We offer a multidisciplinary-team-based approach in head and neck oncology, and cleft lip and palate, and work closely with consultants in the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery and Clinical Oncology Departments.

The combined Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics is supported by a full-time maxillofacial technician, who has special expertise in maxillofacial prostheses (home page).

Specialist clinics:

  • Joint cleft lip and palate clinic (role of max.fax technicians);

  • Joint head and neck oncology clinic.

Orthodontics

The Orthodontic Department works closely with the maxillofacial and plastic surgeons and offers a consultation service to all local practitioners. Treatment within the Hospital is undertaken only on complex cases.

Trauma, haemorrhage, infection or any swelling in the head or neck, or any oral lesion or ulcer of unknown cause that has not healed within three weeks should be referred. Appropriate investigation can be arranged and a subsequent appointment made with the joint head and neck oncology clinic. For an urgent appointment, please ask for the on-call oral surgeon for advice or for a same-day emergency clinic appointment.

Suspected facial and oral cancer

Addenbrooke's publishes a referral proforma for suspected facial and oral cancers on Addenbrooke's Online website (for use only within the NHSnet). A copy is also available here for those general dental practitioners (or other referring doctors) who do not have access to this network. This form is only for use by general practitioners, GDPs or other hospital consultants. Please fax completed forms to the Maxillofacial Unit, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics Department, Addenbrooke's, Fax: 01223 216 708.
