How can I help prevent serious diseases of the mouth and face?

It is common to notice changes in the skin of your face or on your gums, tongue and cheeks. Usually these are the result of wear and tear and will clear up on their own. Some are early signs of something more serious and so we recommend that you remember the 'three-week rule'.

The Three-week rule:

'Any suspicious lesion (white or red patch, an ulcer or swelling) of the face, jaw, mouth, head and neck, which has not healed within three weeks should be seen by an experienced health professional such as a maxillofacial surgeon'.

Why is it important to get lumps etc checked out?

Because some of the lesions in your mouth and face are deep seated (eg in the jaws), you might only notice symptoms (eg swelling and pain) when they are fairly advanced. This is why it is important to get them checked out as soon as possible - the earlier we know what they are and the quicker we can treat them, the better.
