We provide comprehensive maternity services including:
Antenatal care: This is provided both in the hospital
and community. It is shared between obstetricians, midwives
and general practitioners. All women are offered full antenatal
screening services. A smaller number are offered antenatal
diagnostic services. We have facilities for day-care surveillance
and inpatient treatment. Community-based staff have access
to these facilities, and to the advice of the hospital-based
team.

Intrapartum care: For the majority of
women, intrapartum care is hospital based. Since Spring 2005,
we have a new midwifery-led birth unit.
Postnatal care: This is largely shared between the
hospital and the community. Since 1999, the average length
of stay has decreased, enabling women to go home from the
delivery unit within 2 hours. Women are then supported in
the community by their community midwife for up to 28 days.
Her GP reviews her and her baby between 6 and 8 weeks.
Fetal medicine: We have two Fetal Medicine Consultants
and are developing a Regional Fetal Medicine Department.
Neonatal services: We are the region’s tertiary
referral centre for neonatal services, and active in research.
