Midwifery-led Birth Unit
(MLBU)
Location:
The Delivery Unit and Obstetric Theatre are situated on level
3 (second floor) of the Rosie Hospital. It is signposted from
the main reception area of the Rosie Hospital, which is on Robinson
Way. From the main concourse in Addenbrooke’s site, it is
signposted along the link ('clown') corridor to Level 2 of the
Rosie, and then follow the signs to the Delivery Unit.
Layout and management:
The Delivery unit has a birthing pool, a home-from-home
birthing room, seven delivery rooms and four clinical rooms. The
clinical rooms are used for women who have known high risk factors
that might complicate labour and delivery. One of these rooms
has specialist monitoring equipment for women who require high-dependency
care.
Obstetric theatres: The Rosie theatres provide a twin-theatre
suite for the service. Geographically, they are part of the Delivery
unit and provide 24-hour, 7-day emergency cover as well as six
elective surgery lists. The theatre team provide 24-hour cover
for theatres and recovery including operative department practitioner
support.
A recovery bay of four beds enables women to be cared
for under close supervision for the first two hours following
Caesarian section (and longer if required) before they are taken
to the inpatient wards.
Services:
The Delivery unit and obstetric theatres aim to provide a high
quality of care to mothers and babies during childbirth and the
immediate post-natal period. We offer both midwifery and consultant-led
care; the lead carer will be decided from a risk assessment in
the antenatal period and by the woman’s choice.
-
We deliver approximately 5000 babies per year
-
We have a 26 % caesarean rate (elective and emergency, 2004
figures)
-
We have a 20 % induction of labour rate (2004 figures)
-
A comprehensive anaesthetic service with consultant supervision
provides anaesthesia for elective and emergency procedures.
A 24-hour epidural service is also provided for analgesia in
labour when requested.
