Three photographers exhibitSeptember 28 - 16 November 2011
Three professional Suffolk photographers will be exhibiting their work for sale in our main gallery space on the corridor between the concourse and Rosie Wards. From a young age Graham Portlock, John Thompson and John Hansom were ‘hooked’ by photography and have used the medium to either aid their illustrative work or as an artistic form in its own right. In a few words each of them describe what photography has meant for them: John Hansom approaches photography as an art form. ‘My camera is simply part of me - it is how I express my creativity; it is also an essential piece of equipment that I need to do my job as a designer, along with my sketchbook and computer.’ The graphic elements of our environment, and great light are what inspire Graham. For him, ‘photography is all about observation - having the 'eye' for a potentially good shot that has gone unnoticed by others, and then interpreting it with strength and style, and without any visual distraction.’ John Thompson ‘has always had a passion for photography and strives to create images that merge photography and art. Pictures that are not just a record but show a spirit of the subject and fire the imagination.’

Exhibition of paintings by Marcus Nisbet and Adrian TuchelGraphic artist and architect, Adrian Tuchel has looked for and created beauty from his surroundings, fuelled by his great passion for travel. His individual style of minimalist paintings, observe transparency and light, often taken from his favourite cities, Cambridge, London and Venice. Painter, Adrian Tuchel, says of his work: “Cambridge draws attention as much to the new things that are going on as to the celebrated achievements of its past. Whether in the expansion of a nature reserve or in the redevelopment of an urban space, the signs are all around of a community adapting and modernising whilst seeking to stay in touch with what it has known. The uncertainty and the hope that are part of these processes inspired me to produce these paintings.” All these paintings will be for sale and on display at our gallery in the corridor between the Concourse and Rosie Wards. 25% commission on sales will go towards running the arts programme. Photographic ExhibitionLocal photographers, Peter Looper, Ian McCarney and David Price will be bringing an unusual and inspiring exhibition to us this month. Although David and Ian take their initial inspiration from their surroundings in and around Cambridge, their interpretations are quite different. David is inspired by the flora and fauna found in and around Cambridge, in particular the Botanical Gardens. He enjoys accentuating reality and capturing the sensual responses provoked. While Ian takes photos of Cambridge’s world famous streets, attractions and surrounding villages, but from a unique and fascinating perspective, producing striking images. Peter Looper’s photographs are taken from locations in the UK and abroad, concentrating his theme on reflections – ‘pictures within pictures’. He looks for reflections “as they add an extra depth and often convey a serene or tranquil mood” We hope you enjoy the exhibition, which will be running as usual from the gallery in the corridor between the Concourse & Rosie Wards. 25% commission on sales will go towards running the arts programme. 11 August – 6 October ![]() ![]() Landscapes & SkysAddenbrooke’s Arts Gallery (corridor between the Concourse and Rosie Wards) The sky has been a source of inspiration in varying ways for the three local artists exhibiting with us this month. Virginia Albutt likes to begin her work with the sky, ‘because it brings to life the hue and dept of the landscape’. For Charlotte Garrod and Jess Sutton, painting the sky is one way of recording a moment in time. In Charlotte’s minimalist paintings she captures changing moments and movements of plants and landscapes in East Anglian. It was throughout May 2009 that Jess photographed the sky daily and from these created a fascinating ‘Skylogue’of paintings.

Two local artists inspired by two different CulturesPeter Cavaciuti, professional artist and lecturer studied Chinese and Japanese painting under the leading artists in this field. He has continued to research and study Japanese culture and aesthetics, especially Cha No Yu (The Art of Tea) and Zen which have contributed to the colouring, subject matter and compositional formats of his painting. Peter works with Chinese ink and traditional pigments on handmade paper to create delicate Japanese still life’s and floral images. He has exhibited in England, Japan, Switzerland and Belgium and has shown frequently at The Royal Academy and The Royal Watercolour Society. Graduating in illustration and etching, Delia Delderfield went on to travel and was so taken by Greece in the 1970s she set up home and studio there for over 10 years. Her way of etching on to copper plate gives an impression of a very fine veil of colour, similar to a watercolour. In her own words: “Greece never fails to inspire me, the combination of light and texture is unique. I have become obsessed by the timeless quality of the old family houses in Corfu often hidden from view in wonderfully wild and neglected grounds - I wish I could record them all.”
7 January to 2 March 2010
Robin & Isobel StempPhotography and Painting Exhibition This month we welcome a combined photographic and watercolour painting exhibition by two local artists, mother and daughter, Robin and Isobel Stemp. The weather, view and Isobel’s emotional response play an important part in how she interprets landscapes. Isobel aims to convey a sense of joy and colour in her loosely applied watercolour paintings. Natural light is essential for Robin’s unusual photography and why many of the images have the time and date they were taken as the titles. Robin creates minimalist interiors in miniature, allowing the natural shifting light onto the scene for its varying colours and intensity.
