Revd Dr Derek J Fraser BD
Lead Chaplain
Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge

After a brief career in banking in Newcastle upon Tyne, Derek trained for the Baptist ministry at Glasgow University and the Scottish Baptist College, completing a BD joint honours degree in 1977.

  • He was the Minister of Crown Terrace Baptist Church, Aberdeen from 1977–1983.

  • He was Senior Minister of Croxley Green and Sarratt Baptist Churches in Hertfordshire, 1983 –1994.

  • He successfully completed doctoral studies while in pastorate in the field of Old Testament studies at Glasgow University in 1988.

  • He was one of the senior Chaplains at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust from 1994–2001.

  • It was during that time, that he chaired the Leeds Bereavement Forum from its inception in 1995 until 2001; this is a city-wide network, which draws together both the professional and voluntary sectors.

Derek moved to Cambridge in 2001 to become Lead Chaplain at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. He has a particular interest in bereavement issues and leads the Trust's Bereavement Group, and is a member of the Clinical Ethics Committee and the local Research Ethics Committee.

  • He is a Department of Health Assessor for whole-time chaplaincy posts.

  • He co-ordinates the National Chaplaincy Research Network Group.

  • He is a Senior Associate in the Cambridge Theological Federation and is actively involved in developing new patterns of pastoral training for students.

  • He chairs the Chaplaincy Academic and Accreditation Board.

  • He is the convenor of the Health Care chaplaincy group of the Baptist Union.

  • In his spare time, he tutors in Ethics and Old Testament with Open Theological College, University of Gloucester.
