About Referrals

When a general practitioner (GP) requests that a patient is seen by a specialist at Addenbrooke's, this is called a 'referral'. We work closely with GPs and their funding bodies (including primary care trusts) to ensure that this process is fair and efficient.

Status of referrals: Many of the services provided by Addenbrooke's for its patients follow a referral letter (or fax) from their GP to us at Addenbrooke's. As soon as we receive this request, it is entered into our computerised Hospital Information System (HISS). The clinical need is prioritised and the patient allocated an appointment.

Generic referring: It is helpful if GPs or other referring doctors write a 'generic' referral. 'Dear Consultant' rather than specify a particular individual. Patients and GPs feel for the first appointment that it is more important 'how quickly they are seen' rather than 'who sees them'.
