The Social Services Department at Addenbrooke's, which is located out of the main hospital, consists of two teams:

Children's Health Social Work Team Tel: 01223 714 444

The Children's Health Social Work Team provides a social work service to children and families who are currently users of the Paediatric and Maternity units of the Hospital, and also to children attending the Accident & Emergency Department. General social work input for families whose home address is outside Cambridgeshire will come from their local area team. We will liaise with their area team and might be able to provide limited support to inpatients. The Team includes Sargent Social Workers, who work exclusively with children with cancer and their families from all across the Eastern region. The Team carries out assessments of need, including of children in need of protection and, based on these assessments, develops plans of work in partnership with families and other agencies involved. The Team can offer advice on other services available within the area, and will on occasion redirect enquiries to a more appropriate source of help. The Hospital-based team works closely with area teams. Where longer-term work is required, cases will be transferred to the appropriate area team.

Adult's Health Social Work Team Tel: 01223 714 400

The role of the Adult's Health Social Work Team at Addenbrooke's is to help patients resettle back into the community with an agreed and appropriate level of care (after they are discharged from hospital). Some patients will require further care and support when they return to home from hospital. The Adult's Health Social Work Team at Addenbrooke's is responsible for agreeing these appropriate levels of care. The social worker will meet with inpatients and work closely with the ward and other appropriate agencies to set up care to meet their needs, for example home-based care.

In general, benefit queries should be raised either with the Department of Social Security (DSS) or with an advice agency, such as those who visit the Information Centre, which is next to main reception. Housing matters should be addressed to the appropriate Housing Department.
