At Addenbrooke's, speech and language therapists work in the Speech and Language Therapy Department and also in the Emmeline Centre (for hearing implants) and in the Child Development Centre.

We work closely with people of all ages who have difficulties in communicating and also in swallowing. These include children with language disorder, cleft palates and lips, people with hearing impairments before and after treatment with hearing implants, adults with voice problems and older people who have had strokes and other neurological damage.

We carry out detailed assessments and draw up and carry out treatment plans to help them maximise their communication abilities. We also train families and local professionals in the patients' communities to carry out treatment plans under guidance.

We work closely with other health professionals in the hospital and also in the community. Some of our work is done on the wards but much is in outpatient clinics or in the clients' home setting. The Trust strongly supports on-going development of specialist skills and research is encouraged.
