Visiting times on Ward C5

  • Please call for visiting times.

Patients can tire if they have too many visitors. If the patient is not well enough, the nurse in charge might ask visitors to restrict the length of their visit. Please do not visit between 1300–1430, because this is the rest period for patients.

Ward profile

The Ward has 33 beds, which are for general medical and nephrology patients. Patients are admitted to the Ward as emergencies and from the waiting lists. Ward C5 is a very busy and 'acute' environment because of the large number of admissions and discharges (people coming into the Ward and leaving).

There is a four-bed bay for patients who require closer monitoring; these four beds are for both sexes. Please inform a member of staff if this is a problem; we will be happy to discuss the situation. All the other areas of the Ward are single-sex bays.

Your nursing staff

Ward C5 operates 'team nursing'. This is a simple staff process, whereby a team of nurses is made responsible for the care of a group of patients. We believe this process enhances the quality of care that we can provide for our patients. You can find the names of the nurses who are looking after you on the whiteboard in your bay or side room. This information will be updated regularly.

Your medical staff

You will be seen by a doctor from the medical team daily, and consultant ward rounds take place twice a week. If you have any questions about your medical care, please ask the house officers, who are available daily between 0900–1700. If you or your family wish to speak to a member of the medical team outside these hours, please speak to one of your nurses, who will try to arrange this for you.

Facilities

There is a day room on the Ward with a TV and a small lending library, which you are welcome to use during your stay. A WRVS trolley visits the wards (further details). Addenbrooke's has a chaplaincy service (further details).

Personal belongings

We only have a limited amount of storage space, so please try not to bring too many things with you. It is not advisable to bring valuables or large sums of money into hospital (see notes on valuables).

Clothing

When you are not undergoing special tests etc, please feel free to wear day-time clothes.

Meals and drinks

Meals are ordered a day in advance on the menu cards that are provided. The ward assistant will provide hot drinks at meal times (from 0745 hours, from 1200 hours, from 1700 hours) and also mid-morning, mid-afternoon and at approx. 2000 hours.

Special diets

If you are on a special diet or therapeutic diet, the ward staff will contact our hospital dietician to arrange this for you. The dietician will also be available Monday–Friday to provide specialist information regarding your diet.

Safety

The Hospital has a no smoking policy, which includes the wards (further information). Please switch off any mobile phones within the Hospital (further information). Each bed has a buzzer panel for calling a nurse, and there are call-bells in each of the bathrooms and toilets, which are identified by their red cords. The fire exits are labelled at the end of each ward.

Discharge from the Ward

  • Medications: If you require medications to take home with you, these will be given to you by the ward staff before you leave. Please don't leave without them. It can take a few hours for the Hospital Pharmacy to prepare your medications, so bear this in mind when you arrange a time to leave.

  • Outpatient appointments: You will be told if an appointment has already been made for you or whether it will follow on in the post.

  • Transport: Please try to arrange your own transport home from the Hospital. Hospital transport is only available for patients who can not as a result of their clinical condition use other forms of transport (further details). Please ask the nurses if you will need a medical certificate for periods of more than four days

Suggestions, comments or complaints

We aim to make your stay with us as pleasant and comfortable as possible, and strive to provide the highest quality of care. If you or your family have any suggestions or comments, please discuss them with the ward manager or nurse in charge, or you can discuss them (or any complaints) with the Patient Advice and Liaison Service.
